How to Calculate Discount

A discount calculator helps you figure out the final price you'll pay after a discount is applied. This is useful for shopping sales, comparing deals, and understanding your actual savings.

Discount Formula

Final Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount% / 100)

Double Discount (Stacked Discounts)

When stores offer "extra 10% off on already discounted price," the discounts are applied sequentially, not added. For example, 20% + 10% off is NOT 30% off — it's actually 28% off.

Final Price = Original × (1 - First%) × (1 - Second%)

Discount Calculation Examples

  • Simple discount: ₹1,999 with 20% off = ₹1,999 × 0.80 = ₹1,599.20 (you save ₹399.80)
  • Double discount: ₹1,999 with 20% + extra 10% off = ₹1,999 × 0.80 × 0.90 = ₹1,439.28 (effective discount: 28%)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Discount amount = Original Price × (Discount% / 100). Final price = Original Price - Discount Amount. For example, 20% off ₹500 means ₹500 × 0.20 = ₹100 discount, final price ₹400.
  • Double discount means applying one discount on top of another. The second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. So 20% + 10% off ₹1000 = ₹1000 × 0.80 × 0.90 = ₹720 (not ₹700).
  • No. 20% + 10% off means you first get 20% off, then an additional 10% off the reduced price. This gives you an effective discount of 28%, not 30%.
  • To find the original price before discount: Original Price = Final Price / (1 - Discount%/100). For example, if you paid ₹800 after a 20% discount: ₹800 / 0.80 = ₹1,000 was the original price.
  • Calculate the final price for each offer and compare. For example, "40% off ₹1000" (₹600) vs "₹350 off ₹1000" (₹650) — the percentage discount is better in this case.
