What is a GST Calculator?

A GST (Goods and Services Tax) Calculator helps you determine the GST amount, CGST (Central GST), and SGST (State GST) on any given amount. It supports both exclusive (adding GST to the base price) and inclusive (extracting GST from the total price) calculations.

GST Calculation Formulas

GST Exclusive: GST = Amount × GST Rate / 100
GST Inclusive: GST = Amount − (Amount × 100 / (100 + GST Rate))

In both cases:

  • CGST = GST Amount / 2
  • SGST = GST Amount / 2

GST Rate Slabs in India

  • 5%: Essential items like packaged food, footwear under ₹1,000, transport services
  • 12%: Processed food, computers, mobile phones, business class air tickets
  • 18%: Most goods and services including electronics, financial services, restaurants
  • 28%: Luxury items like cars, ACs, aerated drinks, tobacco products

GST Calculation Example

GST Exclusive: If you sell a product worth ₹10,000 with 18% GST:

  • Base Amount: ₹10,000
  • GST Amount: ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800
  • CGST (9%): ₹900
  • SGST (9%): ₹900
  • Total Amount: ₹11,800

GST Inclusive: If the total price is ₹11,800 (including 18% GST):

  • Base Amount: ₹11,800 × 100 / 118 = ₹10,000
  • GST Amount: ₹1,800

Frequently Asked Questions

  • GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty with a single, unified tax system introduced on July 1, 2017.
  • CGST (Central GST) is collected by the central government and SGST (State GST) is collected by the state government. For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally between CGST and SGST. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged instead.
  • GST Exclusive means the GST is added on top of the base price (base price + GST = total). GST Inclusive means the total price already includes GST, and you need to extract the base price and GST amount from it.
  • GST rates vary by product category: 5% for essential items, 12% for processed goods, 18% for most services and electronics, and 28% for luxury items. Check the HSN/SAC code of your product on the GST portal for the exact rate.
  • No. Essential items like fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, and grains are exempt from GST (0% rate). Some items also attract special rates or cess in addition to the standard GST rates.
  • IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax) is charged on inter-state transactions (when goods or services move between states). The full GST amount goes as IGST to the central government, which then distributes the state share.
