How Number-to-Words Conversion Works
This tool breaks a number into groups of three digits (ones, thousands, millions, billions, trillions) and converts each group to words, then assembles them.
Common Use Cases
- Cheques: Banks often require the amount written in words (e.g., "Three thousand five hundred rupees").
- Legal documents: Contracts and deeds often write large amounts as both numbers and words for clarity.
- Invoices & receipts: Some businesses include the written amount on invoices.
- Education: Teaching place value and number sense to students.
Examples
- 0 → "Zero"
- 42 → "Forty-two"
- 1234 → "One thousand two hundred thirty-four"
- 1000000 → "One million"
- 1234567 → "One million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven"
Limits
This converter handles numbers up to 999 trillion. For larger numbers, you\'ll need to split and convert separately.
Example: Cheque Amount
You\'re writing a cheque for ₹25,500. The "amount in words" line should read:
Twenty-five thousand five hundred rupees only
The "only" at the end is a convention to prevent fraud (you can\'t add digits after it).

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Currently it uses standard international grouping (thousands, millions, billions). If you have amounts in lakhs (e.g., 5 lakhs = 500,000), enter the number in standard form and it will convert correctly, though the breakdown will be in millions/thousands, not lakhs/crores.
-
Simply "Zero" — or on a cheque, leave the amount line blank and note "void" if the amount is truly zero.
-
This tool converts whole numbers only. For a cheque of ₹1000.50, write the rupees portion (1000 = "One thousand") and handle paise separately or note it in a remarks field.
-
Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are written with hyphens (twenty-one, ninety-nine). This tool includes them automatically.
